Several
members of SCOH (Soaring Club of Houston) who had built hangars
this past year asked me to make them copies of the dolly I had designed
for myself. I mis-counted the number of requests I had received and I have an extra dolly, which is for sale.
This
dolly has a very low ground clearance (about 3/8") and the height of
the plate the main wheel sits on is only about 3/4", so it's easy to
load even a two place glider with just one person and not too much
effort. If you have any high spots or abrupt changes in slope,
this dolly may not work due to the low ground clearance.
This
dolly design has a very limited ability to change direction, which is
what I wanted. My glider has only 1 foot of
clearance at both the nose and the tail to the hanger doors. As a
result, I wanted something that was very predictable.
For my
hangar, I've put down some wing tape on the concrete and it's easy
enough to just follow the
tape with minimal steering. To steer, I just put a slight
left/right twist at the wingtip and the dolly will slowly change
direction as it rolls forward. Perhaps 1-2" of left or right
direction change over say a 10 foot distance....slight...
There is a built in locking bar to keep the wheel from rolling off the dolly.
